The 18th century bore witness to a diversity of gardening styles and
the most famous of all English landscape improvers, Lancelot ‘Capability’
Brown. However, Gloucestershire had little need of Brown’s particular
skills and his work is almost unknown in the county.
Instead, Gloucestershire boasts the rarer glories of Lord Bathurst’s
Baroque forest garden at Cirencester Park and the Rococo delicacy of the
Painswick House gardens. Cirencester Park was influenced by Stephen Switzer
and Alexander Pope, and is home to Alfred’s Hall, one of the earliest
of Gothic garden buildings. The Rococo Garden at Painswick House was artfully
captured by the fan painter, Thomas Robbins.
