Kingcombe’s creator, Sir Gordon Russell, was an influential furniture
designer and Chairman of The Design Council. He engaged two of the 20th
century’s most important garden designers, Russell Page and Sir
Geoffrey Jellicoe, to create a series of water gardens using an inspired
mixture of ‘modern’ materials. This must surely be the only
Gloucestershire garden to have been featured in Concrete Quarterly.
In contrast, Rosemary Verey’s patrons included royalty and pop
stars and her garden, at Barnsley House (now a hotel), has provided some
of the strongest images to have shaped 20th century garden design. This
garden encapsulated her passion for structure, careful use of colour and
the resurrection of the potager.
