Abstract
Another in our series exploring the history of lost gardens around the county. This is the first of two articles on Dumbleton Hall looking first, at the gardens of the ‘Old’ Hall which were featured in the Kip engraving of c 1710 and tracing their development through to the early nineteenth century. Special mention is made of the archaeological investigations undertaken by Gloucester and District Archaeological Research Group in 2003.
Abstract
The early eighteenth century Kip engravings of Gloucestershire not only illustrate the seats of the county aristocracy and gentry but also, some less prestigious decorative gardens and many productive gardens. This article investigates these lower status gardens which are often overlooked by modern garden history. © Martin McNichol.
