Lawrence Johnston: The Creator of Hidcote Manor Garden by Graham S.
Pearson
Graham’s book Hidcote; The Garden and Lawrence Johnston
was published by the National Trust in June 2007. This lecture uses the
research he has undertaken as the Hidcote Manor volunteer Archivist both
in this country and overseas. New research dispels some of the myths that
have collected around Johnston and casts some new light onto the development
of this truly great Gloucestershire garden.
With Christmas on the horizon, copies of Graham’s book will be
for sale: price £20.
Friday 8 February 2008 – 7.00pm
Historic Gardens of South Wales by Liz Whittle
Following our very successful visit to the Pulhamite garden at Dewstow
we wanted to take the opportunity to find out more about Welsh gardens,
some of which are almost on our doorstep. Who better to introduce us to
some more historic Welsh gardens than Liz Whittle, who, working for CADW
(Welsh Historic Monuments) is responsible for all of the country’s
listed historic gardens and landscapes. She is also the author of the
most informative book, The Historic Gardens of Wales.
Thursday 10 April 2008 – 7.30pm
‘Moonlight and Nightingales: German Romantic Gardens?’ by
Steven Desmond
Steven Desmond has become a firm favourite with members of the Trust
for his knowledgeable lectures and his smooth and entertaining delivery.
The tantalising title of this lecture builds on his recordings for Radio
4 earlier in the year. We will learn about the garden contributions of
the architect, painter and designer, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the writer
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and royalty, including our own Prince Albert.
