Perched on a rise above a meadow and close to the village church of St. Bartholomew, Winstone Glebe cannot be described as ‘tucked away’, yet it does stand remote from the rest of the village, along a narrow lane leading to a farm and the tiny church. The garden surrounds the house, a ha-ha at the front allowing it to blend with the Cotswold landscape beyond.
Behind the house there is more formality with a classic herbaceous border and a relatively newly planted rose border. Restoration of the garden has been undertaken by the current owner who will introduce her garden to us.
Members will also be able to examine earlier plans relating to the garden, with the possible involvement of the landscape architect and garden designer, Sylvia Crowe, who was a contemporary of Brenda Colvin at Swanley Horticultural College in the 1920s, and went on to collaborate with her on many projects including Harlow New Town and various industrial landscapes.
A short stroll along the lane, the Grade1 listed Saxon/Norman church is the second highest in the Cotswolds and well worth a visit. Its main structure dates from 1070 and its two oldest bells from 1320 and 1420.
